Respect

What's happened to respect in our society today? It seems that everyone is so caught up in their own objectives that they don't have time to be respectful of the people that come into their life. I've mentioned before that I believe everyone comes into our life for a reason. If we don't pay attention to them & respect what they have to say to us, we'll never learn the message that they have for us. For our lives to move forward in the harmony we are meant to live in, we need to let go of our own expectations in all of the relationships that enter our lives.

The rudeness & noise that so many people deal with others is all EGO based. We all have EGO's & we need to realize that to live our life in harmony we need to overcome the me, me, me of the EGO. Every person deserves respect regardless of who they are, what they look like or where they come from.

In our forgone days we had great respect for others in our life, especially the elderly. We would always take time to listen to the wisdom that our elders had for us. We may not have always agreed but we would listen & respect what they had to say. This knowledge passed down through the generations has served us well in moving the world to a better place.

In our current time most of us are so caught up in our own agenda that we don't have time to listen or respect the others in our life. The messages we need to hear to move our life forward & to be in a more joyful place will never be heard if we don't respect the people that come into our lives.

Love & respect go hand & hand for me. If we can all begin from a place of love we can learn to respect all the people of the world & grow in love even more. People that feel their thoughts aren't respected or loved rarely share the wisdom they have. This wisdom can be the key that we need to progress beyond where we are. We will never know the messages that God/universe is sending to us, unless we take the time to open our hearts & respect everyone who comes into our life.

When we respect others, others will respect us. Take the first step to a more joyful life. Find the harmony we are all meant to live in. Be the person I know you can be.

Till Monday, I hope you have a great weekend,

Hugs,

Bill

Quote of the day: "By respecting others we can find the messages God/universe is sending to us. These messages will change our life. Open your heart, love & respect everyone who enters your life & you will have a more joyful life."

Hear Hear! Respecting one another is so important. Old folks in particular have much wisdom to pass on. I say turn off the tv and listen! Great post Bill (as always). I'm going to try and 'tweet' you now :)

I guess the problem is that many people these days have no self-respect. And if we don't respect ourselves how will we respect someone else?

Guess the term "respect" does not exist in many people dictionaries.

Great post!

Have a wonderful day :)

I agree, especially in our culture of cell phones and blackberries! Respect is part of freedom. My mom used to say" Your freedom stops where the next person's starts". That's respect!
Found you through RT on Twitter!

There is really so very little to add to this. Respect comes in so many forms and needs to be given for so many things, and it does not hurt one bit to see achievement in others.
Thank you for pointing these things out for us again and again!

I couldn't agree with you more! It's really sad that so few people have respect for one another. Great post!

I agree with what Lena has said about self-respect. Respect starts within, when you have self respect then you will naturally extend this respect towards others.

Another vitally important point w/ all of this is, the notion of respect needs to be taught to kids by example by parents. Children won't learn it by sitting w/ their heads stuck in front of a computer, or w/ a cell phone glued to their hands.

Respect for self and for others is something that has to be witnessed daily, during formative years, in my opinion to give people a good, solid foundation. Sadly, this doesn't always happen for every individual and we wind up with a lot of very empty bodies walking around in a completely reactive state of mind. This is one of the most holy responsibilities that parents have to their children - to set a strong example and teach with their actions.

When I am complemented on my kind nature, my good heart and how I comport myself, I always thank that person and give the credit to my wonderful Mom and the rest of my family for setting such strong examples for all of us kids to follow and aspire to.

I was sent home from school on occasion for the lack of respect. I like to think that I have grown in this area, but it still creeps up on me more often than I like.

There is something about authority and rules... hmm...

Anyway, I'm trying, and thanks for the post!

I often think of that song from the musical, "Chicago" in which Matron "Mama" Morton and Velma Kelly lament the demise of "Class" in our society.

...and I agree with the above comments on self-respect and I'll add self-discipline and self-control.

Good article, Bill.

No one is born with manners, we learn them from others.

Although respect and manners are not always the same thing. One can be unmannered and still be respectful.

People are taught they are the most important thing in the world these days. So it all about the respect they want but they rarely give any.

You get what you give.

I think you hit the nail right on when you say it is ego based. So many people are so concerned with themselves that they fail to see the needs of others.

I agree with Dawn and Tirzah, respect is a behavior and value that has to be taught and observed.
